The first opening of the Twisted Wheel was in 1963. At that time, it was located on Brazennose Street. But then, it needed more space and so it moved to Whitworth Street two years later in 1965. The club was so popular that retro music fans would travel nationwide to visit so they could dance the night away. This club was known for its all-nighters. In 1971, the authorities shut it down. Later on, the building housed the Placemate 7 as well as teh Legends and Follies until the doors were closed permanently in 2012. In 2013, it was demolished so as to build a hotel.

The New Continental Club was located on Harter Street. It was called affectionately "The New Conti." This cougar club opened up in 1967 once the previous Conti Club was demolished on Oxford Road. Both the Conti Club and new Continental Club were popular among older women and especially nurses. The New Continental Club closed its doors in 2001, but later became The Tube dance club, which also closed after a few years in business. It is worth mentioning that The Hacienda was one of the most reputable cougar clubs in the city of Manchester. In 1982, it was founded by Tony Wilson, a Factory Records CEO. There were a lot of gigs hosted at The Hacienda including Stone Roses, New Order and Madonna just to name a few. The Hacienda club closed its doors in 1997 and eighteen months later, it was demolished.

If you were on a budget and wanted a place where cougars hung out and the drinks were cheap, the Lazy Pig and Idol's Bar would have been the ideal place. The Lazy Pig was a basement bar that opened in the 90s. The building housed Moho Live in later years and had a name change to NQ Live. Jilly's was another Manchester bar that opened up in the 70s. It carried a large crowd when it was Jilly's and even when the name changed to Fagin's. In its prime, there were a lot of crowd gathering, especially the older folks who loved to be entertained by live music and performances from Cliff Richard, Wise and Lulu and Morecambe. Another cougar venue was located downstairs and it was known as the Rafters and later the Music Box. Both the Music Box and Jilly's closed their doors in 2010.

The Plaza opened in the early 1960s and Jimmy Savile was the manager back then. Later on, The Plaza changed its name to Tiffany's, featuring fake palm trees and disco balls, an authentic representation of the 1970s. Later on, Tiffany's changed to Tropicana. Quaffers was opened in 1978 and stayed open for two decades, playing host to several celebrities including the Drifters and Shirley Bassey. The building was demolished in 2004. The popular Rotters Bar, located on Oxford Street was opened in the late 1970s and carried an older crowd. In 1990, the building was demolished.

Other cougar clubs and bars that were well-known, but closed down a few years or several years upon opening include 21 Piccadilly, Discotheque Royale, Sol Viva, The Thunderdome, The Swinging Sporran and Cyprus Tavern.

There is no specific time to go out when you live in Manchester or are visiting because it all depends on where you live, the choices you made from the list, traffic and how late you want to stay out. So, we would recommend 9:30 to 10PM as the right times to leave your home for a cougar club or bar. It would be ideal if you call up the club or bar you are interested in to find out the opening and closing hours. That would give you a better idea of when to actually leave your home.
