In the 1830s, the Ale and Beer Act was introduced by the Duke of Wellington. For that reason, the measure that governed the drinking of alcoholic beverages was reduced to a bare minimum. This meant that the bar scene was not as popular then.

However, it allowed just anyone to open a 'pot house' to sell ale and beer and these were being opened almost everywhere in Bristol. But, this reduced the level of service that cougars were accustomed to. These places were mostly visited by beer drinking men until many of them closed down after a few years in business.

By the time the twentieth century came around, this trend was no longer embraced. Many of the pot houses were demolished; some of which included the Greyhound, Rose and Crown, Merchants Arms, Fourteen Stars, Castle and Ball, Windsor Castle and Bacchus.
